Custom darkness enclosures for microscopes

At NIGHTSEA we developed a novel ‘tent of darkness’, the patented Eclipse MicroTent, to help researchers make fluorescence observations even in brightly lit rooms. This version is still sold by NIGHTSEA/EMS but it is only suited for conventional stereo microscopes, which tend to be on the smaller side. For larger microscopes with assorted accessories such as light sources and cameras a more customized solution is needed. Those are now being made by NIGHTSEA founder Charles Mazel in collaboration with Paula Petschek, the co-developer of the dark tent solution.

The process to design and fabricate a custom tent is fairly involved. The design process typically requires significant back and forth to communicate measurements, understand the operating needs and access points, determine what needs to be inside vs outside the tent, etc. We design a custom-sized PVC frame once required dimensions are determined. We then make paper patterns for the sides/top/back that include the accommodations for eyepieces, camera and light source penetrations, cable handling, etc. Tents can include cutouts for camera/light source coupling, large flaps for sample insertion, slits for arm access to reach controls, and other options. We send this to you for approval or a checklist of needed changes. You return the frame and marked-up pattern and we then make the final product.

Our usual charge for a custom tent is $2,500 plus shipping, but that may vary up or down based on complexity. To date we have successfully provided darkness solutions for nine microscopes with their idiosyncratic configurations and usage requirements, and are at work on two more (see list below).

___________

NOTE - Due to the extra documentation requirements, the challenges of shipping things back and forth multiple times, and dealing with duties/taxes for overseas projects we are only undertaking projects for US-based customers at this time.

If you would like to consider a project to create a darkness solution for your laboratory this is the procedure:

  • Use the Contact form to initiate the communication.

  • Once we are in communication we will ask you to send us images of your microscope, ideally in the setting in which it will ultimately be used, but we understand that that is not always possible. The images should be from the front, both sides, top, back if possible, and should include a ruler, measuring tape, or similar.

  • We will arrange a Zoom meeting to discuss the microscope and associated use requirements. There is no charge for this meeting.

  • If you decide to proceed we will send you a form for signature that outlines the process. Since this is a custom project and requires significant up-front work we ask for a 50% deposit. We will send a quote and invoice and work with your purchasing department to make the process as smooth as possible. A purchase order is required.

  • We will then schedule a follow-up Zoom meeting to get deep into the details and come to agreement on the design approach. This invariably leads to the need for more measurements, and we will request what is needed.

  • We send you the frame and paper pattern, as described above, for fitting and simulated use. This is the time to indicate and agree on modifications.

  • You return the frame and (possibly marked-up) pattern. We make the final version and send it along with an invoice for the final payment.
